J&K’s IPS officer Basant Rath suspended on charges of misconduct and misbehaviour

coronavirus is not a pandemic

Basant Rath, J&K cadre IPS officer, was placed under suspension with immediate effect by the center. Rath, who has been hailed as iconic by a section of masses for improving the condition of traffic in the state, has been suspended over the repeated charges of gross misconduct and misbehavior, MHA declared in a statement.

According to the new order by the MHA, Rath, IPS officer from the batch of 2000, cannot leave the police headquarters without the permission of DGP of the state police.

The order further said that, until the order of suspension stands, Rath’s headquarters will be in Jammu province. Rath was promoted as IGP in 2018 and gained a huge following, especially among the state’s youth. He also had many run-ins with many senior politicians, bureaucrats and officials of the police. He was shifted to his current posting after running in with the Mayor of the municipal committee of Srinagar.

Rath had shot off a written complaint on June 24 addressed the SHO of Gandhi Nagar Police in Jammu urging the officer to take apprehensions about his life, liberty and bald head. Rath mentioned the reason he is writing this is because of the specific activities of another IPS officer, SH Dilbagh Singh of batch 1987, who is the current DGP of state police. He also mentioned it clearly that he is doing this as a private citizen, not as a police officer.

Rath said in his letter that he is not asking for FIR to be lodged against the mentioned person but asks the officer to make this letter a part of the daily diary in the police station. He also said that in case something bad must happen to him, you know who you should be calling.

Rath posted as IGP. The Home guard also marked a copy of the letter for the DGP of the police.
